Protecting Your Child

When your child is little, it's not hard to protect him or her. In fact, it's pretty simple if you hold their hand tightly, teach them important numbers to call, and keep them close within your sight. However, as they get older, they require more independence. Your child may go to parties, sleepovers, concerts and more. It gets a lot harder to protect them, and sometimes you wonder if you've covered everything they need to know in order to stay safe. You will worry almost as much as you breathe. Part of this is being a parent, and the other part is in knowing what you might have experienced as a child. There are certain things you can do to protect your teenager or adolescent as well as you can.

Make sure you know where your child will be at all times. You can get them a cell phone, or have them call and check in. Whether they will be at a football game or a friend's house, it's important that you are aware of where they are and what they are doing. This way, if something happens you know how to get in touch with them or pick them up if you need to. You need to make sure they know where you will be as well. Carry a cell phone so they can always get in touch with you. There are times that your child may need you to pick them up or get them out of dangerous situations. If they can contact you easily and quickly, they will be safer.

Make sure you know who your child will be with. If your daughter says she will be with Janie's parents then make sure you talk with Janie's parents to confirm. This is very important for you to know. Understanding who your child is with is necessary in case you need to get in touch with them, and also to make sure that they are not with someone that they shouldn't be with. However, if you know that your child will be with Janie's parents, but you're not so sure about what kind of people they are, there is something you can do.

Visit one of the many sites available for you to check someone out. By simply typing in a name, you can get access to information about their civil and criminal records, warrants, phone number and address and even marriage licenses and death certificates. This will help you determine whether the person your child is with is safe or not. Never trust someone simply because they seem nice. Sometimes thieves, murderers and others that are up to no good can come across as being nice people. While most of the time, you will find that the people your child spends time with are very safe and clean, there are many instances where a parent took that for granted and ended up being wrong. You do not want to be one of those people who will spend the rest of their lives wishing they had just checked a little better. Be vigilant, and sleep well at night knowing that you have done your best to make sure your child is safe.
